TETANUS * DIPHTHERIA * PERTUSSIS * (Td/Tdap) WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW |
|
Diphtheria and pertussis are spread from person to person. Tetanus enters the body through cuts or wounds. TETANUS (Lockjaw) causes difficulty swallowing, spasms and muscle rigidity. Tetanus leads to death in 2 out of 10 cases. DIPHTHERIA causes a thick covering in the back of the throat possibly obstructing the air way. PERTUSSIS (Whooping Cough) is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection which can affect all ages. |
|
· A new vaccine that contains Td, as well as Pertussis for adults 19-64 years of age is available to replace a booster dose of Td. |
· Td is for people 7 years of age and older. · People who have not gotten at least 3 doses of any tetanus and diphtheria vaccine during their lifetime should do so using Td. · A Td booster is needed every 10 years after the initial 3 doses. |

Johnson County Public Health nurses will screen to determine which vaccination employees receive. |
